Silence is Golden! The Broken Box Mime Theater @PhysFestNYC 2026

Mime remains one of our most ancient art forms, yet it’s often misunderstood. What I witnessed at Broken Box Mime Theater‘s performance was pantomime in its truest form—the creation of entire worlds through the handling of imaginary objects, making the invisible visible.

Founded and directed by Becky Baumwoll, this Brooklyn-based company explores the full spectrum of human experience: motherhood, the complexities of relationships, the wonder of astronomy, the awkwardness and joy of flirting and dating. Each performance transforms abstract emotions into physical reality.

These photographs capture moments where that transformation becomes tangible—where performers and audience share the same imagined space, where invisible objects become real, and where gesture speaks louder than words. I’ve worked to preserve the emotional truth of their performances: the vulnerability, the humor, the profound connection that happens when bodies tell stories in silence.

Broken Box Mime Theater take a well deserved ‘Curtain Call’.

PhysFestNYC was hosted at the Stella Adler School of Drama in New York City!
