Night of Edu-tainment: Visceral Abstractions Delivers Absurdist Puppet Magic ~ 1/29/25

On January 29th, I had the absolute privilege of photographing Visceral Abstractions‘ triumphant return to the Slipper Room with their show “Sex Ed: Greatest Hits!” As someone who’s documented countless performances, I can confidently say this pushed boundaries in the most delightful ways.

The lighting was perfect for capturing the “follicular folly” sequence—the puppets’ hair movements created these gorgeous motion trails in my long exposures. When the “soaring babes” took flight, I switched to my 85mm to freeze those midair moments that left the audience gasping.

The infamous Booty Band segment? Pure photographic gold. The contrast between the puppets’ exaggerated expressions and the audience’s shocked-then-hysterical reactions made for some of my favorite shots of the night.

And I must mention the “penes-on-pointe” choreography—surprisingly elegant through the viewfinder! The precision of movement paired with the absurdist concept created visual poetry that transferred beautifully to still images.

The new characters blended seamlessly with fan favorites, and I found myself alternating between professional documentation and personal belly laughs. This hilariously eccentric show didn’t just tease and please—it actually taught while I captured every outrageous moment.
