I’ve been documenting Kevin Augustine‘s performances for years now, and every time I’m behind the camera, I’m struck by how he operates in his own lane. Kevin is a dedicated practitioner of puppetry, but his work doesn’t fit neatly into any single category—he blends puppetry and sculpture in ways that feel genuinely unique within the community.
Body Concert is a perfect example of this approach. In this 50-minute genre-defying solo performance, Kevin works with an electroacoustic score by Mark Bruckner that’s both bittersweet and haunting. The piece is wordless but deeply human, moving through vulnerability, resilience, and the quiet beauty of being alive. It’s work that poetically elevates our shared humanity.
That intersection of disciplines creates incredibly rich visual material. The sculptural quality of the puppets, the way the theatrical staging unfolds against Bruckner’s score—the compositions practically build themselves. It’s work that rewards close attention.
But here’s what I tell people: these photographs are just artifacts. If you get the chance to see Kevin perform live, go. Experience the joy of this work in person. The performances are exceptional, and there’s something about witnessing that blend of puppetry and sculpture in real time that no image can quite capture.

There are still a few more days of wonderful performances at @PhysFestNYC. Go and treat yourself to a terrific experience. Live theater at PhysFestNYC!
