Clown R&D at The Idiots Hour

Another Wild Week at The Idiot Hour

Every Wednesday night, a small but devoted crowd packs into Revision Lounge on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to watch something you won’t find anywhere else: clowns breaking in brand new material, live, in front of an audience that couldn’t be more supportive if it tried.

The acts are wonderfully unpredictable — one moment it’s a surreal costume piece that defies easy description, the next it’s a raw, self-searching monologue filtered through the lens of a clown’s mind. What ties it all together is how visual the work is. Even when you can’t quite explain what you just saw, you felt it, and that’s half the fun of being in the room.

I try to make it out at least once a month to see what this community is cooking up. The whole thing is produced by Matthew Silver, who — true to form — also performs in nearly every show himself.

This week’s lineup:

Hosting: Lanessa Long

Performing: Avi Gorman, Taylor Ray, Andres Del Globo, Philip Tanofsky, Kevin J. Allen, Mary Clohan, Elize & Eddie, Cam Poter, Catherine Davis, Hannah James, Kym Priess, Sebastian Maroun, Josiah Parks, Matthew Proctor, and Matthew Silver

If you’re in the mood for something strange, funny, and completely unfiltered, The Idiot Hour happens every Wednesday at Revision Lounge. You never quite know what you’re going to get — and that’s exactly the point.

All the photographs from the show are posted here but I was unable to identify the performers in the photos.
