Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show – Quarantine Edition – April 27, 2020

April 27th was a great night to be home watching the Bindlestiff Open Stage Quarantine Edition Variety show. A wonderful lineup and so much talent on the screen. (Usually presented as a LIVE SHOW!)

Keith Nelson introduces the show and the evenings festivities.

Joe Barney performed a little ‘carny’ magic with 3 rubber frogs.

Olivia Porter performed a wonderful eccentric dance/mime performance piece with a beer bottle.

Catskill Kenny (Kenny Raskin) told a few corny jokes and then sang some wonderful songs with his ukulele. This song we could certainly enjoy now!

Dan Wasdahl performed several amazing stunts all at once. Juggling clubs, hula-hoop, spinning a ball on a mouth stick and Rolla-Bolla.

Host Keith Nelson introduced to the viewers an age-old stunt. The spinning top.

The Fleet Family 5 performed a straight jacket ‘mass-escape’ by the 3 boys. Put in the straight jackets and then into cardboard boxes and then taped shut! (they had flashlights!) They escaped quickly and with lots of ‘pizazz’.

Beth Beauary performed a beautiful aerial silk act.

Stephanie Monseu celestially invites the viewers to participate in an online survey.

Edge Szumowski performed a magical illuminated ‘chinese yoyo‘ act.

Adam Gertsakov performed the ‘The Barbie Oedipus”.

Keith attempts the Kendama-Blockhead stunt again! Maybe next week?

Gena Schvartsman Cristiani performed an amazing act with clubs, hats and balls.

Keith celebrated Ellia Bisker‘s birthday by playing ‘Happy Birthday’ on the nose flute.

And then (with the help of a confederate) gave Ellia a wonderful Bindlestiff tradition – Pie in the Face!

To make a donation (helps pay the performers who are currently our of work) please use the above modern methods of payment.

That’s all for now folks!

Tune in next Monday at 7:30 pm for another Bindlestiff Open Stage Quarantine Variety Show!

Thanks for viewing the show and for donating to the cause.

Feb. 2020 – Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show

Every first Monday of the month the folks at Bindlestiff Family Cirkus put together a variety show with everyone invited. New performers and seasoned ones can all try out their acts on the lovely Dixon Place stage. This month was short and sweet! Only 9 acts!

Hosted by Keith Nelson of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus organization. A great performer with numerous skills from many performing arts disciplines. Here he is opening the show with his ‘Chinese yoyo’ act.

Luther Bangart followed Keith with some lovely poetic club juggling.

Book Kennison and Logan Kerr slowed down the evening with a musical duet.

The next act was something new for the delightful and very funny Joel Jeske. An excerpt from his new one-man show ‘The Artist Will Be With You in a Moment“.

Host Keith attempted to catch an imaginary bottle of water on an imaginary umbrella.

He did catch the small urn on the stick!

The charming and very talented mentalist Robin Channing startled the audience with his amazing skills. I thought of a word and told him my birthday and he had them written down on a post-it during his drive to the theater earlier that night!

After intermission, the show began with some political song from aerialist/singer/choreographer Cleo Carol Knopf.

The next act was Jacob D’Eustachio who recently returned from his working with UK based Giffords Circus. I photographed Jacob in 2009 performing at the Bindlestiff show and now he is back in NY for more juggling/comedy mischief.

Jacob started by juggling some machetes and then handed out lemons to quite a few audience members and ask that they throw them at him. He did cut a few in half with the machetes.

Recently relocated to NY, Rich Potter is a clown with lots of performing history up north. He is trying out material in NY. Tonight he performed a ‘surreal’ piece of comedic physical clown.

The last act of the evening was aerialist Nina Gershy musically accompanied by Book Kennison and Logan Kerr.

Every first Monday of the Month at Dixon Place! Lots of great acts and always surprises.

When you visit Coney Island USA you have an odd feeling you have stepped into another time. This ‘not-for-profit’ corporation is dedicated to ‘popular entertainment’ and like the rest of Coney Island, it means fun and excitement.

Dick Zigun is the founder of this wonderful oasis and has created a “Sideshow Hall of Fame” for all of us that are a ‘little different’.

Here he explains it all for you in this Vaudevisuals interview.

Vaudevisuals Bookshelf – “Juggling – From Antiquity to the Middle Ages”

“Juggling – From Antiquity to the Middle Ages” – the forgotten history of throwing and catching

by Thom Wall

This is a very comprehensive book on juggling. Written with humor and great research. Here is a quote from the book!

The book sites a historical time line along with my illustrations and photographs. This is one/half of the chart published in the book. Don’t want to give away too much!

Great read for jugglers and fans of juggling alike!

Thom Wall sets the standard for future work by circademics… I predict that [this] book will become the textbook on juggling history. – Richard Kennison, CircusTalk

Juggling: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages is an incredible resource to anyone interested in the history of juggling. Thom Wall has filled in many gaps to the documented history of the art. This is the juggling history book that I’ve been waiting for. – David Cain, Curator, Museum of Juggling History

Here is an interview I did with Thom recently.

~ ~ ~

Leah Orleans and Etienne McGinley are the ‘Acrobatrix’ and they are funny and talented!

With sheer muscle and a great sense of comedy these two were so much fun to watch.
