March 2020 – Bindlestiff Open Stage @Dixon Place

So. for starters we are now in ‘Lockdown’ in New York City. The next Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show will be broadcast to you on the internet. I will try and take some screenshots for those folks who won’t be able to watch. Here is last month’s show in pictures!

Bindlestiff’s co-founder and host for the show Keith Nelson takes the first slot in the show for his ‘Chinese yoyo’ routine.

Maks and Chelsea perform their hysterical antics.

In the spirit of vaudeville Keith takes his time winding the string on his top.

Keith gives an example of how ‘folks’ use to have longer attention spans and looks at the top.

Mariko Iwasa invites an audience member to be part of her performance ‘tea’ ceremony.

The volunteer clad in a Japanese kimono and waiting to sample the tea that Mariko is pouring.

Delaney Bayes performed a beautifully lyrical juggling routine with grace and finesse.

Keith threw a potato into the air and caught on a fork. Nice move!

Ellia Klein was amazing in her contortion act.

Mark Gindick came on stage with a ‘singer’ persona but it changed when Michael Bongar intruded.

And then he recruited an audience member that was blown away by Michael Bongar leaf blower!

Molly Siksin performed on the trapeze with skill and abandonment.

Cassandra Nemser was very vocal (she sang Opera) while escaping from her straightjacket.

Miss 360 performed a deLIGHTful hula hoop routine.

Cleo Carol Knopf sang an original song about her ‘hero’ Bernie Sanders!

Jean-Taé S. Francis performed a charming ‘rola-bola’ act.

Surprising the audience with his Spider-Man costume was aerialist Shawn E. Shawn.

~On April 6th, 2020 The Bindlestiff Open Stage Show will be Broadcast on the internet~

I hope you enjoy this new VERSION of the show! Stay tuned for more information.

Last week the NY Goofs completed a full week clown workshop at The Flea in lower Manhattan.

Led by Dick Monday and Tiffany Riley the workshop includes other select teachers. This summer Jay Stewart, Hovey Burgess, Hilary Chaplain were on hand.

Here are some photographs from the show.

The New York Downtown Clown Revue – Historical Post

It seems like only a short time ago I began photographing the NY Downtown Clown Revue.

It was December 2006!

It was being presented at the cellar space on St. Marks Place called UNDER ST. MARKS.
Christopher Lueck and Amanda Pekoe began the show on a shoe-string budget.

The sign was attached to the wrought iron gate at the top of the stairs that led to the basement performing space.

Christopher and Amanda worked constantly getting new talent to perform in the revue.

Every week it was a new group of performers. On several nights they would have performers that weren’t clowns but comedic and funny. The Pajama Men performed in the review and now have a run at St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Some of the regulars at the revue are pictured below.

The NY Downtown Clown Revue has a new home!

DIXON PLACE

Come and see the show. You will have a great time laughing and smiling.

December 2010 – NY Downtown Clown Revue at Dixon Place

Host – Christopher Lueck introduces the evenings Talent!

~~~~~~~
Jacob Deustachio
Visiting home from circus school, Jacob Deustachio wowed audiences with his freshly polished juggling act packed with amazing skill. He’d have to have balls to come on stage with that act and he had 7.  7 balls all by himself!
~~~~~~~

Chispi El Payaso

Chispi El Payaso is working his way around the world spreading his message of joy and peace. His brief stop here in NYC resulted in an orchestra of squeaking, squawking, and thumped balloons. Have a safe journey Chispi El Payaso!

~~~~~~~~
The cleaning lady wasted our time yet again. (Katherine M. Horejsi)
~~~~~~~~

THE GAMES

Mariko Iwasa was the winner of the evenings clown game (a variation of musical chairs played with clown noses). Showing true Japanese sportsmanship she beat out contestants from GA, PA, and NJ  taking home a DVD of classic clowning and three rubber chickens!

~~~~~~~
Michael Schruefer
Just back from Japan and on his way to Flordia, Michael Schruefer took on the commission to create a musical clown act with a tramp character. He pulled together his skill as clown and flautist to create a fun and silly piece. Mr. Schruefer is off to be married soon, so get ’em while you can ladies!
~~~~~~~

Matt Mitler – Commission Work

Matt Mitler took on a commission that only he could create. The commission was to create a shamanistic clown piece with musical themes. If you missed it, you missed some serious comedy and serious spiritual cleansing.

~~~~~~~~
JOEL JESKE
Finishing up the evening were comic greats Joel Jeske and Barry Lubin, with guest appearance by Mr. Lubin’s Swedish sweetheart. These two are one of the best duos imaginable. Joel’s serious stillness is the perfect invitation for Grandma to run amok and slowly torture the great Jeske. Barry also proves that water-spiting with your girlfriend is always fun. Who knew?
