Vaudevisuals interview with Mélissa Smith – “The Magician’s Assistant”

The Magician’s Assistant

Magician’s sick in bed?! Too bad! THE SHOW MUST GO ON! The Magician’s Assistant is a physical comedy about the transformative power of believing in yourself and asking for help. Everything seems under control until the Magician’s lovely Assistant blunders onstage and has to entertain the crowd in the magician’s absence. Clown Mélissa Smith switches characters with expert comedic flare, finding a delicate balance between chaos and control, vulnerability and confidence. Video projections and animation by Ingrid Larson add an extra dose of unexpected folly. The Magician’s Assistant encourages empathy, laughter and eating your veggies! The Magician’s Assistant makes its NYC premiere after playing across the Northeast. Audiences Old and Young have been delighted by this charming and hilarious romp.

Written and Performed by Mélissa Smith

A critic is seated smack in the middle of a series of events he is meant to review, and people mistake each other for things they are not. A wild, vaudevillian comedy that investigates the critical impulse, from its most elegant to its most petty.

Vaudevisuals interview – Karen Jenson interviews Lorcan Otway @ Theatre 80 St. Marks

2015.08.22_Otway-40Theatre 80 St. Marks Place – Karen Jenson and I visited Lorcan Otway at his historical theater.

2015.08.22_Otway-4880 St. Marks Place was The Jazz Gallery until 1964 when Howard Otway took over. Beginning during Prohibition, 80 Saint Marks Place was a vital destination for performers of all kinds. Jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk, Harry “Sweets” Edison, John Coltrane and Frank Sinatra performed here before Theatre 80 was established in the former nightclub.

During our time with Lorcan he talked about his mother and father who were responsible for creating the theater and keeping it working for so many years. His father Howard was an actor and decided it was important to offer a venue for new and exciting work.

Lorcan has established a Not-for-Profit in memory of them.
