The Clown UnMasked Series – A Comprehensive List 2010 – 2016

The Clown UnMasked

In 2010 I had a concept in my head one day that I should photograph my favorite subjects (Clowns) without their performance costume and makeup and match it with a performance shot. The ‘Unmask’ shot would be black and white and the performance shot in color.  I decided to call it The Clown UnMask. I began shooting in Feb. 2010 with one of the funniest clowns I know and admire. Glen Heroy.

I followed up with many more (almost 50) until I stopped shooting the series in 2016. Here is a comprehensive list of the performers (with links to the original posts) I documented in my ‘hallway’ studio. In the order in which I photographed them. Full post are reached by using the links. Some portrait are provided for visual excitement!

(The wall came down in 2016 so the series was discontinued)

2014 New York Clown Theatre Festival – ‘tinydangerous-popcorn’

Andy Sapora and John Leo hosted an evening of ‘clown short’ films. However they didn’t waste any time getting into their ‘tiny dangerous‘ fun!

2014.09.21_NYCTF_019John Leo and Andy Sapora start the show off with some eccentric dancing and stuff.

2014.09.21_NYCTF_058John Leo pierces this arm with a long needle and bleeds a little. (the ‘dangerous’ part of tiny dangerous’.)

2014.09.21_NYCTF_069Just before intermission Andy and John make an ‘offering’ to the audience of some really delicious cookies.

2014.09.21_NYCTF_071Three audience members accept the offering and are ‘drafted’ to make a short film during intermission.

2014.09.21_NYCTF_078After intermission and before screening the films Andy sets his arm on fire for a more ‘ooohs and aaahs’.

2014.09.21_NYCTF_079More ‘insane’ antics followed this but due to ‘R’ rated website I am not able to post the photos.

Here are links to the films that were screened.

‘tinydangerousfun’ – April 2014 @ Branded Saloon – Brooklyn

tiny – dangerous – fun

These are the ‘ingredients’ that go into making this monthly variety show so wonderful.

Lots of wild acts and a ‘basement show’ feeling. What can they do next? LOL

This month was a blast! The word ‘variety’ certainly was appropriate for the acts that appeared in April and of course it was APRIL FOOLS DAY!

‘tinyDANGEROUSfun’ @ Cloud City – Sept 24th, 2013

An email was sent out to all the ‘regulars’ of tinyDANGEROUSfun that stated the following:

John Leo is getting married!!  And tinyDANGEROUSfun! has been out of commission all summer! (ever since the Sycamore bar basement got shut down by the man!)  What better way to surprise John Leo than by secretly getting the show back together in a new location?  He’ll show up thinking it’s for a date with his fiancé but then he’ll end up having to co-host the show!

Here are some photographs from the evening’s festivities!

“Handshake Uppercut” – Jay Dunn & John Leo – 2012 NY Clown Theatre Festival

Handshake Uppercut

Jay Dunn and John Leo – From Brooklyn, NY

(Notes from NY Clown Theatre Brochure)

Two gentleman brawlers drag each other through eternity with only each other’s courtesy and cruelty to keep them alive. A hysterical, brawling clash of 1920’s silent film and rock ‘n’ roll vaudeville, Handshake Uppercut is an unabashedly dark, erotic, edgy, and super funny experience. Oscillating between gleeful savagery and seething politesse, Fringe circuit veterans John Leo (Best of Fringe, SF: ’03/’08) and Jay Dunn (Edinburgh & Philadelphia ‘10) take silent comedy to its outer limits in this hilarious Beckettian duel. Straight off a successful run at the Chicago Fringe 2012, Handshake Uppercut debuted at the NY Clown Theatre Festival cabaret in 2010.
