Vaudevisuals interview with Tammy Faye Starlite – ‘Why’d Ya Do It?’

“Tammy Faye Starlite went all the way: impersonating Marianne Faithfull, rock musics fallen woman, with an uncanny accuracy. Her simulation of Ms. Faithfull’s vocal style and combustible blend of arrogance and scabrous sarcasm only begins to tell the story.”

Stephen Holden – New York Times

~ ~ ~

“Now, as Marianne Faithfull, British pops queen of survival, Starlite resurrects 1979s Broken English as a thoroughly modern tale of adventure, abyss and hard-won vengeance  one of the most brutally frank albums of its time, made flesh again, in poignant lethally honest character.”

David Fricke/Rolling Stone

~ ~ ~

Following a month of sold-out performances in March of her portrayal of Marianne Faithfull, pegged to the 40th anniversary of the landmark Broken English album, Tammy Faye Starlite has announced a new production titled “Why’d Ya Do It?: Tammy Faye Starlite Performs Marianne Faithfull’s Broken English at Pangea” this fall. The show, directed by Michael Schiralli whose credits include Varla Jean Merman and the Mushroom Heads, Scraping the Bottom: The Most Offensive Songs of Jackie Hoffman and Tammy Faye’s own acclaimed Nico Underground, launches Wednesday, September 25 and then plays every Thursday in October with the run concluding on Halloween.  Two preview performances are set for Thursday, September 12 and September 19.

Tammy Faye originally performed Broken English at Lincoln Center and brought it to Joe’s Pub and The Metropolitan Room; later she performed Marianne Faithful: Exposed at Joes Pub and McCabes in Los Angeles.  Thereafter, she took Cabaret Marianne on the road to Provincetown, Chicago and St. Louis.

Erin Markey at Joe’s Pub – “Rainbow Caverns”

ERIN MARKEY’S RAINBOW CAVERNS: GREATEST HITS OF ALL TIME INCLUDING THE FUTURE!

Erin Markey’s show is so much fun! From her stories to her songs to her antics on stage – the audience was enjoying every minute of this “Greatest Hits”.

Luckily I was in the front row leaning on the stage. Here are some shots for this wonderful show.

Erin sang many wonderful songs from her shows.

The other woman in (Girl Group) the show sang a chorus with beautiful voices.

The emotions that she evokes during her songs are so heartfelt.

Becca Blackwell and Erin Markey singing a fight between them.

Notes from the Program:

What we’re trying to say is that Erin Markey and co-composer Emily Bate will present musical excerpts from their critically acclaimed musical A Ride On The Irish Cream (2016)*slow-jam cabaret funeral Boner Killer (2017)and in-development Beach Boys/Spice Girls inspired energy concert Little Surfer (2019). They wouldn’t dare do it by themselves, though. With them are a rock band, a girl group, infamous schmerm/lover Becca Blackwell and many disgusting exceptions to Markey’s no-sequins rule in the costume department. The audience is invited to watch as Erin’s comedic storytelling melts into gorgeous harmony-driven music, but guaranteed: Erin will turn her wild eye on you and give you a slumber party command you don’t dare disobey.

Penny Arcade at Joe’s Pub – “Longing Last Longer”

untitled-15
She started the show by walking through the audience ‘warming up’. She was assisted by her long time collaborator Steve Zehentner who provided the music and directing for the show. A great duo I must say! She quoted Quentin Crisp, John Giorno and other beats from her coterie of friends.

untitled-25
Penny Arcade spoke to the audience like a Counter-culture spokesperson at her best! A ‘work-in-progress’ that will be touring to Edinburgh and London.
Make sure you get tickets for the last remaining 2 show coming up on June 1st and 8th at Joe’s Pub. Here is the link…No Excuses! Go See it!

After doing a video interview with Penny Arcade a few weeks ago, I had to see her show! It was delicious. Counter culture bohemian!
