The Clown UnMasked Series – A Comprehensive List 2010 – 2016

The Clown UnMasked

In 2010 I had a concept in my head one day that I should photograph my favorite subjects (Clowns) without their performance costume and makeup and match it with a performance shot. The ‘Unmask’ shot would be black and white and the performance shot in color.  I decided to call it The Clown UnMask. I began shooting in Feb. 2010 with one of the funniest clowns I know and admire. Glen Heroy.

I followed up with many more (almost 50) until I stopped shooting the series in 2016. Here is a comprehensive list of the performers (with links to the original posts) I documented in my ‘hallway’ studio. In the order in which I photographed them. Full post are reached by using the links. Some portrait are provided for visual excitement!

(The wall came down in 2016 so the series was discontinued)

Vaudevisuals interview with Helen Donnelly – Toronto

During a recent visit to lovely Toronto I had the pleasure of interviewing one of my favorite women clowns Helen Donnelly. We originally met at the NY Clown Theater Festival in 2012 when she performed her show “Saucisse: A Foo Musical”.

Helen is award-winning professional clown artist: a rare mix of theatrical, circus and therapeutic clown.

She works as a hospital clown in Toronto and has set up a school that prepares clowns to work in the hospital environment. Below is the trailer for her newly produced film “A Therapeutic Clown Emerges”. A documentary of the process she went through to find a new clown partner.

To purchase a copy of “A Therapeutic Clown Emerges” (DVD or digital), visit www.helendonnelly.com
Proceeds go toward supporting our Therapeutic Clown Program at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

“Saucisse: A Foo Musical” – Helen Donnelly – Toronto, Canada – 2012 NY Clown Theatre Festival

From the 2012 NY Clown Theatre Festival Brochure:

“Foo, a skeptical, nomadic peddler, strikes an unlikely friendship with Saucisse, a new-age vegetarian pig. Foo is horrified when he discovers the awful truth about Saucisse’s Divine Plan. Will Foo make the right choice and honor his friend’s wishes? Or take action and alter the pig’s destiny? Find out in this clown musical about friendship, fate, and meat.”

Foo opens the show with a Cowboy character.

Foo gets caught in the spotlight of the authorities.

‘Foo’s tragic end…’
