Vaudevisuals Interview with actor Jeremy Crutchley and director Geoffrey Hyland – “Sacred Elephant” @ LaMama etc

Heathcote Williams wrote SACRED ELEPHANT in 1989. It has been adapted to the stage by actor Jeremy Crutchley and director Geoffrey Hyland. "Sacred Elephant' was performed in South Africa 18 months ago to wonderful reviews. Now being presented at LaMama etc for a limited time. I met with Jeremy and Goeffrey at
LaMama before one of the shows this past week and they discussed their origin of interest in the poem by Heathcote and how it became the amazing production being presented at LaMama presently.

Official Sacred Elephant Play Website:

Here is a short video excerpt from the dress rehearsal of "Sacred Elephant" at LaMama. The show is being performing thru Sept 22nd.

Heathcote Williams poem “SACRED ELEPHANT” Opens at LaMama featuring Jeremy Crutchley

LaMama Presents SACRED ELEPHANT by Heathcote Williams

I photographed the dress/tech today of this amazing show. It is based on a poem by English author Heathcote Williams and adapted for stage by Geoffrey Hyland and Jeremy Crutchley.

The Official Website for this beautifully acted show states the following:

The play’s immediate and essential subject is the elephant itself, mysterious, majestic – the world’s largest and oldest living land-mammal – yet it ultimately confronts the tensions in the extraordinary and historic relationship with humans – sounding out the nature of the mind and soul of Man.

Jeremy Crutchley is “The Other”, a presence caught between worlds. While the inspiration comes out of Africa, the themes are universal: as relevant in the heart of the city as in the wild. This is us, now. There is simply no other drama quite like it.

Here are some photographs from the dress/tech today. The show times and dates are listed below the photographs.
