‘Once Upon a Time In Coney Island’. 12/5/20 ~ A Benefit

Life hasn’t been the same without the joy of visiting Coney Island USA! Not being able to see the shows, chat with friends and eat some popcorn at the Freak Bar. This Saturday the folks there have organized an amazing cast of ‘very important’ people for your viewing pleasure!

From their site: Once Upon a Time in Coney Island, a salon-like evening of readings, stories, performances, and memories that capture the heart and soul of the People’s Playground. Hosted by the inimitable Adam Realman, our Museum benefit will feature luminaries including Neil Gaiman, Alice Hoffman, Kevin Baker, Bill Griffith, Todd Robbins, Richard Eagan, Trav SD, and others to be announced. Amid the chaos and strife that defined 2020, this special event is an easy escape into the wonders of Coney Island. Apart but together, we’ll focus on what makes this place so magical … and with your generous support, begin the next chapter in its spectacular story.

For more information go visit them ‘virtually’ and see what is in store for you when you attend this ‘Grand Event’.

Ticket sales end on Saturday, December 5, at 12pm ET

Vaudevisuals Bookshelf ~ “Rose’s Royal Midgets and Other Little People of Vaudeville”.

Vaudevisuals.com is proud to announce the launch of Vaudevisuals Press!

Starting with Vaudevisuals Press postcards and then in November the publication of a very wonderful collaborative book.

“Rose’s Royal Midgets and Other Little People of Vaudeville”.

Not your ordinary ‘performing arts’ history book! A wonderful look at an early 1900’s theater company that toured the USA for many years entertaining thousands at theaters, fairs, carnivals, circus and vaudeville. They were ‘Little People’ with Lots of Talent!

Penned by author/blogger/actor/producer Trav SD with a terrific Foreward by “Shocked and Amazed” publisher James Taylor. Illustrated with personal photographs from an original member of Rose’s company and vintage postcards of the company and other performers.

PRESALE GOING ON NOW!

“Without pandering nor passing judgment this book documents in detail the performers, producers, the stage routines themselves and the various venues from those straight up and upscale to others shameful and shady. This book probes both the Dark and the Dazzling sides of the American Imagination. Only rare books like this seriously confront our more bizarre past and allow the new generations of show folk to revise to reinvent to reform American Theater.”

Dick Zigun Founder/Director ~ Coney Island USA

Congress of Curious Peoples – Hall of Fame Inductee Ward Hall

Ward Hall was inducted into the Coney Island USA “Hall of Fame” last year at the Annual Conference of Curious Peoples.

“The Conference of Curious Peoples” was scheduled for this year but ‘Cancelled’ due to the Coronavirus Pandemic!

Ward Hall was titled the King of the Sideshow for a good reason. He kept his show going for many years.

For more information on Ward Hall, you can read this great book by Tim O’Brien – “Ward Hall – King of the Sideshow”.

“Bloody Brains in a Jukebox” – An Interview with director Jennifer Miller

Considering the cancellation of so many wonderful shows due to the ‘coronavirus’. I decided to ‘rerun’ some of the wonderful interviews I did with directors/performers of those shows. Today is the delightful, Jennifer Miller. A uniquely talented performer/director. Listen in as she talks about the show “Bloody Brains in a Jukebox” (written by Dick Zigun with music by Nikos Brisco) that she directed and never ‘OPENED’ due to this event. We are thinking it will arise and OPEN in the not-too-distant future at the delightful Coney Island USA.

Keep your eyes on Coney Island USA website for updates on this rock-opera!

Vaudevisuals interview with Jennifer Miller

Dick Zigun’s rock-opera ‘Bloody Brains in a Jukebox‘ is being directed by none other than Circus Amok’s own Jennifer Miller. I sat down with her at Coney Island USA and ask about the upcoming show and her directing of it.

Bloody Brains in a JukeBox is a rock opera, with a libretto by Dick D. Zigun, music by Nikos Brisco, and direction by Circus Amok’s Ethyl Eichelberger Award-winning Jennifer Miller. In this sung-through and psychedelic sci-fi satire, characters resembling Sidney Poitier, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Coogan, and Jayne Mansfield tussle with a talking, flying, brain-eating Wurlitzer Model 1100 jukebox – with results as mind-blowing and out there as anything you’ve ever seen at the sideshow.

Interview with Dick Zigun – Sideshow Hall of Fame

When you visit Coney Island USA you have an odd feeling you have stepped into another time. This ‘not-for-profit’ corporation is dedicated to ‘popular entertainment’ and like the rest of Coney Island, it means fun and excitement.

Dick Zigun is the founder of this wonderful oasis and has created a “Sideshow Hall of Fame” for all of us that are a ‘little different’.

Here he explains it all for you in this Vaudevisuals interview.

Vaudevisuals interview with Dick Zigun – “Bloody Brains in the Juke Box”

Last week I took my camera and visited Coney Island USA to speak with Dick Zigun about his upcoming rock musical “Bloody Brains in a Juke Box“.

BLOODY BRAINS IN A JUKEBOX!

A ROCK OPERA by CIUSA Founder and Artistic Director Dick D. Zigun (libretto) and Nikos Brisco (music), directed by Circus Amok’s Jennifer Miller

To be presented at Coney Island USA’s Sideshow by the Seashore

In this sung-through and psychedelic sci-fi satire, characters resembling Sidney Poitier, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Coogan and Jayne Mansfield tussle with a talking, flying, brain-eating Wurlitzer Model 1100 juke box – with results as mind-blowing and out there as anything you’ve ever seen at the sideshow. Bloody Brains in a Jukebox is Coney Island USA’s most ambition stage production ever, wherein Dick Zigun’s libretto and Nikos Brisco’s music interface with the patented madness of Circus Amok and the talents of several alum of the Bread and Puppet Theater, including Ethyl Eichelberger award winning director Jennifer Miller.

While best known for such programs as the Mermaid Parade and the Coney Island Circus Sideshow, Coney Island USA has also been the longtime home of Funhouse Philosophers, a resident theater company devoted to presenting the plays of artistic director Dick Zigun, a Yale School of Drama and New Dramatists trained playwright whose previous works have included Dead End Dummy, Killing Republicans, The Ride Inspector’s Nightmare, and last season’s show The Education of Al Capone as Told by Jimmy Durante. In recent years, Funhouse Philosophers has been experimenting with the rock opera format in an effort to make abstract ideas like cosmology accessible via music and parody. Bloody Brains in a Jukebox is the culmination of that long-term exploration.

Funhouse Philosophers is the experimental theater company in residence at Coney Island, USA.
