The New York Downtown Clown Revue – Historical Post

It seems like only a short time ago I began photographing the NY Downtown Clown Revue.

It was December 2006!

It was being presented at the cellar space on St. Marks Place called UNDER ST. MARKS.
Christopher Lueck and Amanda Pekoe began the show on a shoe-string budget.

The sign was attached to the wrought iron gate at the top of the stairs that led to the basement performing space.

Christopher and Amanda worked constantly getting new talent to perform in the revue.

Every week it was a new group of performers. On several nights they would have performers that weren’t clowns but comedic and funny. The Pajama Men performed in the review and now have a run at St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Some of the regulars at the revue are pictured below.

The NY Downtown Clown Revue has a new home!

The Kapinski Private Eye Academy – NY Clown Theatre Festival Show

The Kapinski Private Eye Academy

It was a cold and windy night with a thunder storm. The rain came down.

The show had to move from it’s original location to under the BQE.

These photographs were taken as evidence that the show went on despite the weather.

Butt Kapinski heralded the crowd of spectators to gather together and peruse the situation at this new yet unknown territory.

Walking with the crowd checking out the clues.

What is going on here? Let’s find out.

Yeah. It goes like this! You need to ‘want’ to investigate.

This is what I am talking about! Concern and insight.

As the crowd watches on the real ‘threat’ hides behind the column.

This victim is squirming and shaking so much from the knives imbedded in his chest. What to do?

The lineup. The Audience. The students. The action is near!

The Private Eye Academy students watch as Butt Kapinski tells it like it is!

When all is said and done the detective and director walk off into the night!

Great show and a learning experience for all.

2010 NY Clown Theatre Festival ‘Kickoff’ Parade

On Friday September 3rd The NY Clown Theatre Festival got off to a great start with the Clown Parade. Beginning in Union Square and moving to The Brick  Theatre in Williamsburg where the festival is presented. More than 100 clowns and admirers moved through the streets of NY and into the L train station for their fun trip to Brooklyn. I have posted a good selection of photographs from that adventure.

John Towsen was present at the parade. John and his performing partner  Fred Yockers were the producers of the First NY Clown Theatre Festival back in the 1983. He was happy to see the tradition continue under the guidance of Audrey Crabtree cofounder with Eric Davis.

Jonathan Kaplan will be performing in the festival in ‘Le Fleur’.

Once the crowd arrived at The Brick Theatre it was only a matter of time until the ‘Pie Throwing Contest’ got started.

First the referee had to lay down the rules and then all hell broke lose!

If you want to see more Clown Theatre that will bring joy to your bones and laughter to your soul…

go here and buy some tickets to the shows!
