Vaudevisuals interview with Sarah the Bird Girl At Coney Island USA

Sarah The Bird Girl performing at Coney Island USA

~ ~ ~

With her uncanny resemblance to Minnie, Sarah presents a haunting and visceral account of the beauty of difference and a hidden story of endurance, from the voice of a natural born freak. Koo Koo and the other unlikely stars of Tod Browning’s revolutionary film, Freaks (1932), are also honored in this performance. Significant, because the film was banned for 30 years for being too controversial, yet it is so much part of our history. Minnie went on to work at Coney Island, ensuring she was free from the life of asylums. This is a very special Coney Island show that will give you both answers and leave you wanting more.

As an internationally acclaimed circus and physical theater performer, Sarah has performed for several companies around the world, including Cirque Du Soleil. Most recently she starred as lead female in feature film ‘Reflections in the Dust’ and toured with Extant Theatre UK. She has a TEDx talk and recently spoke at the United Nations. “Koo Koo the Bird Girl” won an Australian Green Room Award 2019 for Contemporary Performance.

REVIEWS

“This is a terrific show – intelligent, emotional and witty, and a direct challenge to the audience’s expectations about performance, identity and what it means to look and be looked at.”

“This is a performance that explores, beautifully, the capacities of the body and the self, rather than letting the differently abled body be shaped by restrictive legal, social and medical strictures that mark ‘deviance’ as a negative thing, instead of a marker of the breadth of human experience.”  – New Zealand Theater Review

“Amazing, moving and revealing… This is an important performance… ”  – Express Magazine, Nov 2015

“Houbolt’s performance evokes a frisson that every misjudged soul can recognise… Evocative… impressive… Houbolt has a gravitas earned through many years performing around the world… Her demonstration of side show is a rare treat.” – Nothing Ever Happens in Brisbane, Nov 2016

“A show that smashes boundaries between herself and the audience… truly unique” – The Creative Issue Nov 2016

Vaudevisuals interview with Geoff Sobelle – ‘HOME’ at BAM

“HOME”

~ Program Description ~

Physical theater artist Geoff Sobelle (The Object Lesson, 2014 Next Wave) leads an ensemble of dancers and designers in a feat of impossible carpentry: raising a house onstage and making a home within it. Residents tumble through kitchens, beds, and baths in a spontaneous choreography of everyday life, as they move in, move out, clean up, burn down, sweep under, paint over, fence off, and move on. At once an enchanting experiment in collectivity and an affecting meditation on dwelling, HOME takes stock of all the stubborn forces that make a house a home.”

Karen Jenson and I arrived at the Peter Jay Sharp building at BAM to meet and interview Geoff Sobelle. Taking the elevator to the ‘Penthouse’ and walking the hallways decorated with posters from BAM’s successful shows from the past was sublime.

The penthouse studio was beautiful and illuminated with gorgeous daylight streaming in from the windows on one side. Geoff was seated at a long table and we proceeded to set up a couple of chairs in the middle of the room.

Department of Fools presents “The Tooth-Puller” at The Pit

OPENING SEPT 29th!

The Department of Fools

presents

“THE TOOTH-PULLER”

The Department of Fools is back for sloppy seconds! After a successful revival at the PIT of their Fringe NYC hit, A History of Servitude, the Fools are returning to the PIT with their newest Commedia creation: The Tooth-Puller. A fast-paced farce of masked mayhem, The Tooth-Puller is playing at the Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) from September 29th through November 5

The Tooth-Puller has no script. Instead, in the grand Commedia tradition, using nothing more than an outline the Fools weave together each performance from bits of comic business, song and improvisation. Commedia dell’Arte is the great-grand daddy of modern improv and sketch comedy. Audiences will roar at the goofy goodness of Commedia, which gave birth to the comedy of today!

The Tooth-Puller is a carnivalesque confection wrapped in hallucinogenic treats, sprinkled with dancing octogenarians, with a pinch of dick jokes, dipped in a festive musical fondue, topped with an ever-changing improvised ending, and filled with a creamy center of love and revenge.

The internationally diverse company includes Sylvie Mae Baldwin, Yair Ben-Dor (ABC’s Quantico), Jessenia Cuesta, Matthew A.J. Gregory (Power of Darkness/The Mint), Shira Hadad, Ben Rademacher, Andy Richardson (Newsies & Gypsy – Broadway), Anna Tempte and Rotem Weiner.

All performances are at The Peoples Improv Theatre – Striker Mainstage

123 Esat 24th Street (between Park Avenue & Lexington Ave.)

Tickets are $12.00

In places where resources are scarce, laughter can be abundant. Clowns Without Borders (CWB) brings small teams of professional artists to perform in refugee camps, conflict zones, and sites of a natural disaster. In 1993, a letter from Croatian refugees to Spanish clown Tortell Pontrona sparked engagement. “You know what we miss most? We miss laughter.” From there, CWB was born. Since then, it has grown to an international NGO, with chapters in 14 countries, reaching over 400,000 displaced children a year.

Our work takes us to the beaches of Lesvos, Greece, the hills of rural El Salvador, the deserts of South Sudan. Though the audience changes, the result is the same. An invitation to play is sometimes all that is needed to help recapture a sense of childhood. We are reminded time and time again, that we all laugh in the same language.

Like laughter, our impact ripples outward, energizing children and the adults who care for them. In a world often divided and stark, Clowns Without Borders proudly co-creates and collaborates cross-culturally.

Come learn about how laughter creates community and builds resilience.

‘The Handsome Little Devils’ at Barfly in Denver, Colorado

THE DEVIL’S WORKSHOP

performed by ‘The Handsome Little Devils‘.

On the outskirts of Denver there exist an adorable ‘beat’ bar named after Charles Bukowski’s “Barfly” film. It is next door to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on West Colfax Avenue.

The night I attended the show featured ‘The Handsome Little Devils‘ duet. The show included juggling, magic, smoke, audience participation and a really fun time! This was the 1st night they were presenting this show at this venue! They will return EVERY first Wed of the month

Here are a few images I captured that night.

Cornelius doing a wonderful ‘hat juggling’ routine.

Audience participation was a key element in this show.

Cornelius doing a ‘$100 dollar bill penetration’ magic illusion.

Just imagine slapstick and circus skills with the good looks of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

Performed, written and directed by Tim Tyler and Joe DePaul.

Right away you begin to laugh at these two wonderful performers.

The routines are timed perfectly and get some serious laughs.

A uke and wonderfully funny voice with voice sound effects.

It is hard to describe the antics these two perform in the show. Go see it!

Christmas time. Wake Up!

King Kong is loose in the theater. Watch out!

It is a very funny show! If they happen to be performing near you go see them!

King Pong’s Ping Pong Rodeo – Michael Trautman – TCF

TORONTO FESTIVAL OF CLOWNS

presents

King Pong’s Ping Pong Rodeo

performed by MICHAEL TRAUTMAN

What happens when you put a clown in a room with 1000 ping pong balls? KING PONG!

KING PONG’S PING PONG RODEO is a truly unique variety show that dares to ask: When is enough, enough? How much is TOO much? Why do Americans go so far? KING PONG combines two of America’s favorite pastimes, “spittin’ and shootin!’”

Michael Trautman has mastered the skills of working with Ping-Pong balls!

His pure joy of manipulating and playing with Ping-Pong balls is so contagious.

He brings together skills from many disciplines and weaves them together effortlessly.

Managing to put so many Ping-Pong balls in his mouth is hysterical.

Michael works with so many wonderful ‘vaudeville’ style routines in this show.

There is so much to see in this show and his character makes it all very playful.
