Vaudevisuals interview with Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell

It was a beautiful afternoon in New York City and I visited the Happenstance Theater Company founders, Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell. We had a few hours together to catch up on all things ‘physical comedy’. Including their upcoming show “Barococo” which is Opening at the wonderful 59E59 Theater on March 18th. I questioned them about the show and the origins of the Happenstance company.

From the Press Release!

In this collaboratively devised ensemble work, the award-winning, DC-based company, Happenstance Theater portrays oblivious entitlement on the brink of extinction. BAROCOCO takes a physical comedy dive into the late Baroque and flaunts 18th-century finery, wigs, panniers, gestural styling, elaborate ornamentation and the excesses of Rococo. The show navigates the dangerous curves of manners and the Age of Enlightenment from the exquisite to the revolting. This charming and charismatic six-person ensemble exposes an indulgent aristocratic lifestyle and invites you to experience the charade — from parlor games to pantomime, from the exquisite to the revolting — in this delightful comedy of manners.

Featuring Mark Jaster, Caleb Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Gwen Grastorf, Sarah Olmsted Thomas, and Alex Vernon.

Vaudevisuals interview with Jake Broder – “His Royal Hipness Lord Buckley”

I have always enjoyed the work of Lord Buckley and the people who have been inspired by him.

When I saw that Jake Broder was doing a show about Lord Buckley at 59e59 Theatres  (one of my favorite NY venues) I had to get an interview.

North Coast Repertory Theatre presents

 HIS ROYAL HIPNESS LORD BUCKLEY

By JAKE BRODER
Directed by DAVID ELLENSTEIN
Starring JAKE BRODER
With MICHAEL LANAHAN
Musicians MARK HARTMAN, BRAD RUSSELL, DANIEL GLASS
Following sold-out runs in London and Los Angeles, Jake Broder returns to New York with his critically acclaimed salute to counter-culture icon Lord Buckley. The largely forgotten comedian of the 1940s and 50s, who was described by Frank Sinatra as “the most sensational comic of our time,” is cited as having inspired a myriad of entertainers including Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, Whoopi Goldberg, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, and Bob Dylan, among others.
In His Royal Hipness Lord Buckley, Broder and his be-bop jazz trio will transport audiences back to an exciting reimagining of a Buckley performance in a swirling mix of comedy, be-bop, and cabaret.
“STUNNING! EXTRAORDINARY!”
-The Evening Standard

“IT WAS F*CKING AWESOME!”
-Kevin Spacey

“THE MESMERIZING JAKE BRODER INCARNATES THE 1950S CULT LOUNGE PERFORMER LORD BUCKLEY ON A HEADLONG RIDE THROUGH THE LATE BEAT PHILOSOPHER’S OEUVRE.”

“THE COOLEST, GROOVIEST, GRANDEST COMEDIAN WHO EVER FLAPPED HIS CHOPS ON THIS SWEET SWINGING SPHERE.”
-Washington Post

Vaudevisuals Interview with Rob Drummond – “Bullet Catch” @ 59E59 Theaters

I was delighted to be able to interview Rob Drummond whom I had seen in “Bullet Catch” the night before at 59E59th Theaters. Great evening of magical theater!

A close-up interview with Scotsman Rob Drummond who has written and performs in the hit show at 59E59 Theater in New York City. Direct from a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year. The show is based on an age-old magic trick which Rob has adapted to an evening of theater. He discusses the origins of the play and what the history of it's run here and abroad.

Here is a write up about another one of his plays currently running at the Traverse Theater in Edinburgh.

Parallel Exit’s ROOM 17B – 59e59 Theatre

Photographing the ingenious comedy (which is the creation of Joel Jeske and Mike Dobson) of ROOM 17B was so much fun. A series of surreal, comedic, absurd vignettes. I had a chance to ask the Director Mark Lonergan about his inspiration for creating the show and  the process.

~ ~ ~

“The inspiration for ROOM 17B goes back to a show we did at 59E59 Theaters in 2007 called CUT TO THE CHASE.  One of the reviews for the show challenged us to take some daring leaps and explore new avenues with our work.  With that gauntlet thrown down, we began discussing how to inject contemporary material into a vaudevillian format – purposely pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone.”

(left to right) Mike Dobson, Danny Gardner, Joel Jeske, Brent McBeth

Mike Dobson and Joel Jeske, the authors of the show, began developing some ideas that we explored over a weekend at the Kraine Theater in 2009.  At the heart of these ideas was a group of businessmen putting on a bizarre and interactive presentation.  As we continued to work on the material, our set and lighting designer Maruti Evans ran with the business presentation idea and came up with the perfect setting for the show – a surreal office of floor-to-ceiling filing cabinets.”

Danny Gardner and Joel Jeske

“With Maruti’s design in place, the concept evolved into what we have today – a long-forgotten room in a huge office building in which all the props and costumes appear from the file drawers.  The result is a cross between Buster Keaton, Monty Python, and Tim & Eric – surreal, funny, physical, and modern – and hopefully, a great night of theatre.”

Joel Jeske and Danny Gardner in a surreal office moment.

Brent McBeth taking a seriously uneasy note.

Joel Jeske in absurdly wild pose while being introduced.

I recommend this show to anyone who wants to laugh and  be entertained by 4 wonderfully hysterical performers.

Written by Mike Dobson and Joel Jeske .

Directed by Mark Lonergan.

Original Music by Mike Dobosn

Choreography by Danny Gardner and Brent McBeth.

Set and Lighting by Maruti Evans
