It was December 2006!

It was being presented at the cellar space on St. Marks Place called UNDER ST. MARKS.
Christopher Lueck and Amanda Pekoe began the show on a shoe-string budget.

The sign was attached to the wrought iron gate at the top of the stairs that led to the basement performing space.

Christopher and Amanda worked constantly getting new talent to perform in the revue.

Every week it was a new group of performers. On several nights they would have performers that weren’t clowns but comedic and funny. The Pajama Men performed in the review and now have a run at St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Some of the regulars at the revue are pictured below.

Ambrose has a very diverse career. He has a few One-Man shows and works with an ensemble HAPPY HOURS CLOWNS.

Ambrose Martos has performed standup, clown, improv, sketch and dance around New York City and the world. He was a finalist in the BBC Open Mic competition at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival and once had his roller skating disco act described as “brave comedy” by ABC’s Diane Sawyer. Ambrose is a regular host and performer at New York City’s best vaudeville reviews and has performed on the largest cruise ship in the world for Royal Caribbean. Ambrose plays the lead role in the indie film Lutoski Fish Sticks. He is a 1997 graduate of Clown College, a member of the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit and part of the comedy trio Happy Hour.

Bozo the Clown

The American public has had almost no exposure to the true ‘european’ style clown. This Bozo image has been popularized by the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus and other American circus shows traveling the country for almost 100 years. Most graduates from the Ringling Brothers Clown College (no longer in existence) are required to wear a certain type of clown costume if they make it to the ranks of the Ringling Bros.& Barnum and Bailey Circus. The impression one gets is that this is either ‘family’ or ‘child’ entertainment. Unlike Europe where they have beautiful theatres devoted to serious ‘clown theatre’ where adults attend without the little ones in tow.  There is a tradition of ‘types’ of clown which goes as far back as the greeks. Author/historian/professor John Towsen could tell you more about ‘history’ of clowns in his wonderful blog and his book CLOWNS. In this interview with the trio Le Fromage Royal all three participants talk about their influences on this ‘new’ old skit.
