Hilary Chaplain in her one woman show A LIFE IN HER DAY.
Hilary Chaplain is a professional ‘funny woman’. Her show A LIFE IN THE DAY is an example of a well rehearsed,
clever, timed and executed with a wonderful sense of improv and contact with the audience.
Hilary with a mouth full of delicious marshmallows.
I was present at the last performance on Sunday Dec. 11th. She had run the show since Dec.8th and this was the last performance!
The afternoon show was attended well and the audience was there with her all the way.
She is a professional and has been performing as a solo artist for many years.
A romance with a twist and laughs all around.
Here is a video excerpt from the show.
Catch it when it comes back to your ‘neck of the woods’.
Hew Parham in one of his many incarnations on stage during his ‘Odyssey Schmodyssey’.
Schmoo is born and has to deal with his loneliness, insecurities and demons.
Schmoo has a talk with his beloved ‘Petal’ on the deserted island.
Schmoo has trouble dealing with the idols, fears, beliefs and insecurities of being alone.
An audience member awards Schmoo (Hew Parham) with a ‘I Love NY’ T shirt.
Here is an interview I had with Hew Parham about his work.
I like to think about the World Trade Center pre 9/11.
I always liked the design and look of the towers unlike many other NY’ers.
Photograph I took from a helicopter during the construction of the buildings. (Circa June 1974)
Another view of the still unfinished WTC towers from the helicopter.
Having been part of the Philippe Petit WTC exploratory team I visited the North and South towers many times thru the back stairwell.
Climbing 110 flights and then documenting the roof of the two towers for possible ‘rigging’ connections for Philippe’s clandestine walk.
One one of the first trips we did to the towers I took many photographs of Philippe.

9/11
I can’t forget the day 9/11 happened. I was working on the West Side Highway about 15 blocks north of the tower.
I ran out of my work place to see the second plane hit the tower and watched both of them collapse. It was a very insane moment.
Hundreds, if not thousands of people were rushing up the Westside Highway trying to escape the turmoil and chaos of the event.
Having walked up the back stairwell of both towers on numerous trips I couldn’t comprehend the disaster in front of my eyes at that moment.

But back to 1974.
Philippe would fly into New York for planning his proposed walk and we would meet up and plan a visit to the towers.
One of of these many trips we made to the top of the buildings Philippe stopped on one of the floors and marked on the still unpainted sheet rock a drawing of his ‘high-wire’ walks that he had done and of course the one he was about to do!
Philippe Petit with his drawing on the wall of Syndney Harbor Bridge, Notre Dame and WTC.
This and other photographs that I took of Philippe before he walked on the wire were used in the Oscar winning Doc MAN ON WIRE.
Here is a seldom seen newscast from that special day in August 1974.
For more photographs from the film and others taken during that period check out my website here
Here is a photograph taken of me doing a handstand on the edge of the North Tower with uptown Manhattan in the background.

For more of the story about Philippe Petit’s highwire adventure you can read his book “To Reach The Clouds’ which was later republished as
One of his other books which is a wonderful treatise on Highwire is “On the Highwire“. A collector’s item nowaday.
Stanley Allan Sherman’s MASK ARTS COMPANY presented a workshop with Peter Kors in Metaphysical Mask. The students spent time developing an understanding and performing Metaphysical Mask improvisations through out the workshop. Peter is possibly the only person that comprehends and values Carlo Mazzone-Clementi’s pioneering work with this mask.
Here is the teacher Peter Kors with Stanley Allan Sherman workshop presenter, teacher and mask maker taking the opportunity to do the final improvisation of the workshop together at pierStudios. The sound track was added by me.

I had a chance to do a video interview with NYGOOFS co-founder Dick Monday at the Flea Theatre while he was preparing for the WATER FOR CLOWNS show.
I haven’t finished editing the whole 20 minutes but wanted to put up an excerpt.
I first heard about and saw Dr. John in 1968. I was living in the lower east side on 7th St. between Ave. C and D.
He was quite unique in his appearance and music style. Gathering influences from Louisiana’s diverse ethnic music styles he was very successful
in bringing a whole new feeling to blues, jazz, rock and folk. All meshed together with a very indigenous Louisiana taste.
Here he is quite a few years later performing in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park as part of the CELEBRATE BROOKLYN series held at the Band Shell.
For a really indepth history of Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) and his music and influences go here!
Dr. John playing the Hammond Organ and Grand Piano in Prospect Park’s CELEBRATE BROOKLYN.
The crowd for Dr. John was 5000+ according to one security source. Amazing and fun concert!
In 1984 I had made a meeting with Michael Davis, juggler and comedian to do some photographs for a book I was working on at the time.
The session was at his apartment on the Upper West Side of New York City. I shot some personal ‘at home’ shots and then we scheduled
a session at my studio for a ‘professional’ shot.
Michael Davis is a very funny man. His credits go on for pages. Here is a link to his web page which list them all.
Here are the photographs we took at those two separate sessions.
Michael can be very serious when he wants to but on stage he is a master of comedic timing.
His talent also includes playing guitar and juggling ping pong balls with his mouth!
He is also known to have juggled a bowling ball and egg. Here is that spot on Saturday Night Live.
Some Quotes from Michael’s work.
“Mr. Davis is an inspired deadpan comedian.
I was as close as I have ever been to rolling in an aisle with laughter. Nothing could top him.”
New York Times
“Davis’s act is like a lethal virus- anywhere, anytime, it will kill in a matter of seconds.”
Rolling Stone

If he is ever appearing in your neighborhood I suggest you see him perform.
Not many performers are as funny and intelligent in their humor not to mention his amazing juggling skills!
Here is a video of Michael Davis on one of his hysterical appearances on Johnny Carson show!
